NEO not working after 6.4 update

Today i done update from 6.3 to 6.4 firmware on my NEO and now it is not working.
It is possible to switch it to firmware update mode (with plug connected) , so VBar Control manager see it and i can switch between firmwares without issues.
But when i try to boot it without plug connected it will not boot, still resets self in loop and cause my RX to reset too (SBUS connection) . I tried another RX and it is still same, both RXs works without issues without VBar connected.
If i connect NEO to computer with running software i see that sw try to connect to unit, but after while it resets and continue in loop.
Before 6.4 update everything worked without issues.

Cloud you load a Express and check?

if ok then - Reload the Pro?

Hi Rainer

I already tried 6.4 Express, 6.4 Professional, 6.1 testing and then i loaded 6.4 Professional Rescue. It is still same. Before flashing led flash blue, after flashing unit flash green. I see that mass storage device partition was mounted. Last few times Windows detected corruption on mounted partition and i let it repair with successful result. I tried to flash firmware on three different machines, one MacOS, 2x Windows 10 machines with same result .

Which SN is it?

Okay - there is nothing wrong on our side. Is this a NEO with sat on board or external one? - If external one, disconnect during the update for a try.

Without int/ext sats. I use S-BUS.

Hmmm ... so at this point i am afraid i can't solve it online, it seems to be a hardware issue.

Please file a rma by clicking on this device "service request" icon in your list here. Eddi will take over then, but keep note we have holidays until 4th of January here. I hope you have something else to fly these days ,-)

Until 6.4 update everything worked. As first i connected NEO with SW and checked configuration. I dont have spare unit or helicopter, but it is not a problem. Bigger problem is that i need NEO configuration for every bank, because i dont have latest fonfigurations in my computers, so i hope it will stay preserved. I will try to disconnect everything and flash it again. Is there a way to completely rollout back to 6.3 version?

So i done few tests. I am able to boot my NEO without connected receiver. It starts in Failsafe mode due to missing RX input. Then i am able connect to unit with PC sw. Servos are not armed, but everything seems ok. I am able to boot NEO with connected receiver and turned off radio. When i turn on radio and RX binds with TX, NEO starts that infinite loop of restarts and RX restarts too. If i switch off radio, RX fall in failsafe mode and NEO boot again without issues.
Is not there some incompatibility with Frsky S-BUS receivers and 6.4 firmware? I updated my Frsky receivers to new 2.1 firmware, but after this update NEO 6.3 worked without issues.
Problems is same with both my receivers, but both are same RX with same firmware.

Warmstarts happen when rx binds with tx. I will try to disconnect servos and if problem persists i will send my NEO for service.
But it is strange that this happend in a time of 6.4 update.

How can i save settings for all banks? I cannot switch banks due to channel in failsafe mode and it stays still in Bank2.

Definately it is NEO itself. I done another tests and found:

1.) Disconnected servos, NEO boot and everything seems fine
2.) Connected tail servo, NEO boot and everything seems fine
3.) Connected tail servo and one cyclic servo (independent what servo i use and independent in what servo output on NEO i connect servo), NEO boot and everything seems fine
4.) Connected/disconnected tail servo and two cyclic servos (independent what servo i use and independent what servo outputs on NEO i connect servos), NEO resets itself in loop

Luckily i was able to download configurations for all banks .

Okay - BTW .. on a NEO the setup file contains all banks - so no separate file each bank required ;-)

OK, thanks. I grew on VStabi V4 and V5 software, so i was not sure how it works on NEO .

And today i found ... if i boot NEO 6.4 with only one cyclic servo connected, when unit booted up, i can connect other cyclic servos too and everything works as expected.
Rainer, may you ask Uli if there was not introduced some feature in 6.4 that may cause this behaviour?

i can't see anything wrong on this heli ... except ... probably ... in very rare cases the BEC of the ESC. Could you boot with a 2s LiPo instead the BEC and all servos?

Hi Rainer

I dont have 2s here, but if i connect my complete setup (tail servo to NEO, 1 cyclic servo to NEO, other servos to active RX outputs (RX is powered from NEO, so servos are powered through NEO, but not from cyclic ouputs) - to simulate equal power load) and i power on helicopter there is no problem, so BEC is working fine. Problem is only when is more than one cyclic servo connected to NEO before boot up. There must something happend during 6.4 update.

So i already filled service form and i will wait for reply .

Please test as recommended. Get a 2s - or - get 2s voltage (carefully!!!) from your balancer leads for a check if they are strong enough.

Kontronik (especially known on older Kosmiks) powers the BEC up in 2 steps - and if Kontronik thinks about "hhmmm ... too much current draw in powerup" - it will shut off. This can happen due the servo caps loading behaviour at powerup.

This is not HV setup. But i understand where are you pointing Rainer. So i done it other way. To speed up Kosmik BEC bootup i paired another RX and connected it directly to Kosmik. There is not noticeable difference in speed how fast everything bootup, but practical difference is that it works this way!
So 6.4 must boot little faster, or there is other order of initialisation than in 6.3 (i use NEO AUX3 output for ESC) . But as result, 6.4 load BEC sooner and result is that BEC resets itself.
This setup works for years and much more than thousand flights with ZERO issues.
So what now?

Which RX was it?

Was it exactly the same wiring as with the NEO?
(Master, Slave, Servos)?

Full setup, everything connected to NEO as usual with difference that RX is connected and powered directly from Kosmik - this way everything works and NEO boot correctly.
All the time i used RX connected and powered from NEO. But this not works after 6.4 update. I dont know if there is some delay in port initialisation on NEO (i use AUX3 routing to Kosmik master) or NEO boot too fast after update and BEC is not ready yet that time.
Kosmik will switch BEC from low power mode to full power only when receive correct signal.
But i am talking here about hundredth of second.

Hmmm ... this behaviour of the Kosmik was adressed a few years ago as it is not a good idea e.g. to init sensors with different voltages during powerup. So we just have to wait unless the voltage come up stable with our init.

But - a Warmstart as shown here will not be a result of this. So there must be something else wrong - and as long as it isn't tested with a battery direct on the NEO instead a BEC i stay still on the BEC as suspected item.

Anyway - if you would like to check the VBar in our service, no problem at all, probably makes sense to narrow it down too - just file a service case by clicking on the service icon at this device in your list here, fill out the forms (place a link to this thread for my colleques) and wait for response.

About 6.4 - the only thing which was added to the control loop is the Lightness - is the VBra on pro or pro/Rescue?

In a case of Kosmik, it is as is, this cant be changed and i only read about this problem until 6.4 NEO update.

So you wrote that NEO is waiting for stable voltage? If it is so, then in my case after 6.4 update it dont wait (or it looks so) or it detect voltage faster, or sensors are ready faster, or something other. But clearly BEC is not initialised and NEO power on servo outputs.

I use 5.6V voltage - default, because this is nonHV setup.

NEO is PRO RESCUE, but i tried all other available firmwares with no success.

Warmstart in log is a result of NEO loop of restarts when there is everything connected and RX is powered through NEO. NEO will try to boot, BEC is not ready, BEC restarts, NEO will log warmstart and this way still in loop. So NEO think/expect that BEC is ready, but it is not.

If i boot NEO with RX connected directly to Kosmik, there are no warmstars in log, because it simply works as it should.

I dont think that there is something damaged. Directly before 6.4 update i connected NEO to my pc and everything worked. Right after 6.4 update NEO was not able to boot correctly in same configuration.

Ports on NEO are not damaged too. On FrSky i can bind more RXs at same time. So i connected one RX directly to Kosmik and second one to NEO. Everything booted and worked, because BEC was ready due to directly connected RX.

I am 99% sure, if Uli will prepare modified firmware with short delay before NEO power on servo outputs, it will work.

Power on Servo ... the servo output is not switched. Only the Pulse output to the servos is given as soon as time allows. Probably all 3 together simultaneous (which is the best of course).

As this is the only case we her about this right now - i am afraid we need exactly your equipment to narrow it down if the NEO is okay in our shop at the test bench.

Anyway - lets check the NEO first, please file a service report if not done yet.

OK, i understand, but we both know about what i am talking.
I think that after years we found a reason why some Kosmiks "worked" without backup battery and some needed it.
Kosmik will switch BEC to full power only when receive correct throttle signal. But it need to get correct signal as fast as possible, otherwise there is a chance that there will not be enough power for other equipment to work correctly.
One RX boot faster, one slower, use routing from VBar will add another delay. Here i talk about hundredth of second.
Based on my tests, i connected everything as before 6.4 update with one change. I directly connected throttle signal pin from my RX to Kosmik with single wire. Everything works great.

As soon as time allows and I#ll be in touch with Kontronik i'll address this to get a bit more time unless the esc goes mad here.

The AUX3 solution is only used on the 3rd party radio guys who do not follow our recommendation to use the original AUX function and oner percentage in NEO each bank as we do with VBC - so there may be a delay included too ;-(

It will be best if Kosmik will not wait for correct signal, but it will switch BEC to full power as fast as possible. But it can be hardwired in Kosmik, so i will wait what you come up with.

I understand, my setup is complicated, with few rpms modes combined with different banks and ability to adjust rpms on the fly, retracts, ... And that is a reason why i use AUX3 to route throttle channel.

In a principle, it is not a problem for me to use it as it works now with 6.4 . I am glad i found and solved it so i can use my TDR2 again.

Rainer, can i connect my retracts to AUX3 port on NEO?

You can use AUX3 now for other stuff of course - you can also use AUX2 (if not for Gyro gain used).

The difference is - AUX3 has a built in failsafe after 0.5s for "motor off" when there are no ingoing signals from the RX. AUX2 does not have this, it just holds.
