Question about auto trim

Question about auto trim
December 11, 2019 12:43PM
when using auto trim it reads to get the heli into a hover for aprox 1 minute and try to not give ANY inputs as possible. Is it preferred to shut off auto trim while still in the hover? I ask because when landing you obviously need to give some inputs so will this screw with the auto trim you just did in the hover for 1 minute or does it automatically stop trimming as soon as it detects motor off switch?

Hi,

auto trim state is if a) the model is supposed to be in a hover (approx. hovering collective pitch) and b) if you don't move the sticks, let it drift.

Auto trim is not learning by your inputs, but it listens to the sensors if left alone, and trims until the sensor do no longer read offsets.

So if you are done, land, move the collective stick out of the hovering range (0° like you would do anyway), spool down, disable auto trim, job done.
It will not continue trimming if one of the requirements (hovering pitch or no stick input) is not met.

Kind regards

thank you for this answer, all this time I thought touching the sticks would ruin the trim flight some.

just another thought on this subject, it states that auto trim flight should be about 1 minute long. Is this saying no touching the sticks for 1 minute straight or can the time not touching collectively equal one minute? Im wondering if trying a pirouette during the process to see where the auto trim has gotten me is okay practice?

Hi,

it depends. Auto trim afaik writes a change to the trim memory every second (if not interrupted), then 'listens' to the sensors, then makes the next adjustment.

So if there's not much to do, it will be a quick run, if there's more to trim, it might take a bit longer.

Usually, if you have (combined) about one minute of trim flight state, all should be well.

If you bring back the model, if it drifted too far, you interrupt, if you do a control pirouette, you interrupt, but that doesn't really matter, it does not reset the trim.

Also if you already did a trim flight, if you made some changes on the model and want to re-do it, it will start/continue with the already learned trim values (unless you clear the trim values, then it will start from zero).

Kind regards
