480 stretch with 22mm boom

480 stretch with 22mm boom

This summer I've stretched my fleet from 600 to se w 690's on 10s
my 550 to se to run 600's on 6s
As well my 480 using the older 500 20mm boom at 600mm to allow 523's

My 550 I had previously changed it to run the 25mm boom that looks better/ beefier to me.

SO I started thinking hey- what if 22 or 25mm boom for the 480 so I sourced a local CNC shop and they machined 1mm off the ID of the stock boom clamp to fit the 22mm 550 boom. (1mm of material ID yields 2mm bore in the end )

Then I rounded up some bits from my parts stash over the years and put this together.

Along with the experiment I then cut my 550 boom down to 600mm to fit the belt properly. At this size the boom only added 1 gram, however the tail assembly added 10 total with the longer tail shaft as well as larger tail box fin and side.

It now balances (3300 pack) about 10mm or less rear of the main shaft, however doesn't seem to effect the flight behavior. 3700 or larger packs would most likely solve the balance

I plan to try a few things to lighten the tail if possible, but I am happy with the look and performance at this point

Also my 550/600 skids are modified shorter skids, and I took q fair bit off the struts to make it more 'size' appropriate as well as lighter.

3700 pack balances perfectly.

It is a larger pack, but stays in front of the pinion.

Took off the 550 struts and put the 480 stock ones back. Seems more perportional as well as slightly lighter.

Cleaned up the tail box paint as well.

I was even thinking this would be great at the stock length booms. It opens up the options for larger tail blades and who knows.

25 mm option in the works. RV or Eddie, I was thinking if you guys are interested I could send you a set to try yourself.

Another thought was a maybe slightly shrunk down tail fin to fit the larger tail box configuration.

Hi Steve,

nice job, thank you for sharing. Rainer and me actually both don't fly the 480, but thanks for the offer smiling smiley

Ok just thought I would see if you wanted to see the difference.

I've been flying it a bit more and found it to be amazingly solid. I like the light disc loading and performance you get even at 1900. Very relaxing and predictable. The tail has become the best tail of my fleet somehow.

Will be running a number of sets of both 22 and 25mm with the machine shop when they have the time.

You might consider this as a stretch edition version or put together a stretch kit with the parts required to do it.
(boom and clamp, control rod, belt, tail box etc.)
Flying weight is 5 and 1/4 lbs flies really super.
