What happened to MIK4216 (16t 550sx pinion)?

What happened to MIK4216 (16t 550sx pinion)?
June 10, 2014 12:23PM
There used to be a 16T 5mm Mod .7 herringbone pinion available for the 550sx, part #MIK4216. I recently decided I wanted to try it as I want the option for a bit more pop out of my 550sx. I'm upgrading my ESC and have batteries that can provide the power, but at 1100kV on 22V I can't get the speed without a higher tooth count pinion -- and I can't find it anywhere!

Is it completely dead? Who can I bribe to get one? One of the team pilots done with theirs maybe? confused smiley

Try to find with the name part MIK04216. I have found several shops searching on google with that reference.

Hi,

it's not available any more. Try to get one from dealers world wide.

Biggest in production is 04215, 15th.

Alright. Ordering from Canada.

Here's my request that it be put back into production. thumbs up I know it's taboo to run high head speed on a Logo, but the option to do so is nice to have and there really aren't any aftermarket options.

Hello Jorg,

what is the maximum HS you can run with the stock combo, 15t pinion, vbar governor?

I'm using YGE90LV, Scorpion 4025-110kv, vbar gov and vbar control.

What does not overheat the motor?

I'm asking becasue I don't know if I got a faulty Scorpion but it heated up too much and melted the bearings...

Thanks!

Hi,

we will tell nothing different but the recommendation of 2,300 max according to the manual.
The 15 t will be good for that (with a little lower throttle preset), the 14 t kind of limits the max. rpm physically.
We calculate in a way that the governor can hold the head speed almost through a full battery cycle (means: no 100 % throttle as a preset, but headroom for the governor).
I know that there are pilots who like to set 100 % all across the board and live with drops in head speed when the battery voltage drops, but then I would need no governor winking smiley

You _can_ run higher head speeds, there is a considerable safety margin (like you have to take overspeeding into account even if you don't intend to do the Bossion thing). But running higher head speeds is always at your own discretion.

Personally I see no need: you only trade flight time at an unequal rate.

Regarding the motor, Scorpion motors run hotter than others do, granted, but not to a degree where they self destruct. Not by a very far margin.

If the bearings fail, I would guess they slipped or locked, or were damaged for whatever reason. I can hardly imagine they melt smiling smiley but I'd be curious to see a photo.
If the motor gets sizzling hot (like over 200 °C) the resin would start to deteriorate first, but the metal parts don't melt even if the motor catches fire.

If in doubt, and of course if it's a motor bought from Mikado, you an always open an RMA case with either Mikado USA or with us (www.vstabi.info/rma), depending on what's more convenient for you.

Kind regards

Eddi,

It's not only those wanting to run overspec RPM that need the 16t pinion. Personally, I set up my helis to get the same head speed from start to finish on a flight. With the 550sx, that is NOT possible with a 15t pinion. I had to move to a 16t pinion to have enough overhead for the governor in order to maintain 2300 by the end of the flight.

With my 550se, the 15t pinion works fine because my target head speed is only 2000.

I realize running the extra overhead isn't as efficient for the power system. However, with a YGE and the active freewheeling, I don't really notice any downside except for giving up a little torque.

I'm with hemp.........please bring the mik4216 pinion back?

Hello Eddi,

sorry it took so long for me to get back to you, I only saw your reply recently. Please find the pictures attached, you can see on the second photo the remainder of the melt balls... it got really hot! I will try an RMA with Mikado USA which is easier for me, thanks a lot for your help!

I would also appreciate if 16T and 17T would be available again. I'm getting Warnings with full throttle with 15T pinion at 2200rpm headspeed sad smiley.
Only solution is Modul 1, but therefor i need main gear, pinion, 6mm motor shaft and bearing.

I think there are many customers, which would love to have a little bit more overhead. Why aren't they produced anymore?

Hi again,

we have that topic on our radar already, but it may take time.

If you go mod 1, you can cut a bushing e.g. from a 5/6 mm brass tube, drill a hole for the grub screw, and have a perfectly fitting adapter.
That's what I did on a heli of a different brand, when most motor shafts still were 5 mm in general (in the old days grinning smiley).

You can of course also replace the motor shaft, but that would be more cumbersome.

Thanks Eddi,
does that mean you're gonna offer those pinions to us again?

Best Regards,
Mike

Hi Mike,

that still has to be decided. Procurement is difficult because afaik the price went up insanely for reasons that are not quite understandable.

Speaking for me i'd rather spend a few € more, than not being able to buy a bigger pinion winking smiley

Cheers!
